At the time, however, Reader’s Digest enjoyed the largest circulation in the county. Haley’s journalistic piece promised exposure that Muhammad realized the movement desperately needed to get its message across to the public. Upon Haley’s return to New York, Malcolm X informed him that he had been given permission to do the interview, and the two men began a series of conversations that would link them for the next several years. Haley’s article, “Mr. Muhammad Speaks,” appeared in Reader’s Digest the following year, giving white America its first objective profile of the Black Muslim movement and its brash, militant spokesperson.

This time, however, Haley found himself facing a deadline he did not dare miss but with a manuscript that was still unedited.
