Apparently, in almost four years of college he had not formed any definite plan. Then, toward the end of June, Uncle John Otis, now a member of Congress, came up with an unexpected solution. 27 Later that same year Otis explained to his mother that on hearing of the offer to go to West Point he sat down to think it over. He could, "by industry and frugality," achieve some wealth and ease. "28 The decision must have come, then, while he was still at Bowdoin. After he had completed his college examinations he returned home to Leeds and laid the matter before his mother.
If religion saved him from damnation, war saved him from obscurity. The South's secession from the Union and Lincoln's determination to prevent it rescued Howard from the dull routine and slow promotions typical of the peacetime army. Thousands of men flocked to the colors of the volunteer regiments, providing opportunities for advancement for Howard and his regular army colleagues. Self-interest and higher ideals, however, were not mutually exclusive, as Howard's life illustrates. O. Howard's rapid advance in rank during the Civil War, again something that was not unusual for the talented or the well-connected soldier, placed him at some of the most significant engagements of that conflict.

Perhaps this is why he is not more generally known today. Some students of the Civil War will remember his part in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and historians of Reconstruction will mention him as commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau. Those interested in the Indian wars of the West are probably familiar with Howard's part in the pacification of the Apaches or with his pursuit of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perces in the epic campaign of 1877.
